Teachers' notes - One Small Step
ArtisanCam Performance helps teachers deliver a creative curriculum at Key Stage 2 and 3spacer
all teacher's notes

ArtisanCam Performance/One Small Step took place in Newcastle in 2009 funded by Newcastle City Council and supported by Northern Stage. The project was delivered by Artistsatwork.org the producers of the award winning ArtisanCam website for schools.

The project involved Year 6 pupils watching original archive video clips of the space race, producing their own short plays inspired by significant moments, such as the first man on the moon or the launch of Sputnik. These plays were filmed in front of a greenscreen and edited. The young people then watched the professional performance by Oxford Playhouse and reviewed that production to camera.

We hope to extend the content on this site by adding more of your performances. The notes on this page may help.

If you want to have a go at this activity in your school these notes will assist you.

Archive video clips of the space race

There are seven archive video clips on the ArtisanCam Performance One Small Step page. Some are original footage from NASA, others are newsreel footage from the time. They cover the period from 1957 and the launch of Sputnik, to the first steps of Neil Armstrong on the moon in 1969. Please note, the clip of Yuri Gagarin's first flight into space has been re-edited with a dance audio track.

The clips of the Oxford Playhouse production One Small Step

One Small Step is a play written by David Hastings and performed by Oxford Playhouse which is a brilliantly inventive exploration of the space race. The play is performed by two actors who use household items and an old slide projector to re-enact the significant moments of the period. The play runs for 50 minutes and was filmed during a performance at Northen Stage in Newcastle 2009.
